Former President Goodluck Jonathan signed into law a new pension reform Act in 2014 that repealed the pension reform Act of 2004. The 2014 pension Act mandates that Ex- governors and their deputies be placed on life pension scheme.

As expected, Lagos, Osun, AkwaIbom, Delta, Imo, Abia, Nassarawa, Zamfara, Kaduna, Jigawa, Kano and Kwara states house of Assemblies signed it into law.
Many of the states like Edo, Niger, and plateau etc later joined the flow.

By the provisions of the new pension law, governors and their deputies have the rights to choose a property that they desire after leaving office. Other benefits include cars and medical insurance. The property must be located in Lagos or Abuja.

Buhari told Nigerians during his campaign tours in 2014 that he would review and repeal the law if elected.
Sadly, he has failed to do that because that law also has provisions for him as a former head of state.

Some ex governors were eventually elected to represent their people at the national Assembly and some others appointed as Ministers. People like Saraki, Akpabio, Adamu, Makrafi, Amaechi, Ngige, Fashola etc were collecting Salaries Senators and Ministers.

A body known as SERAP took Saraki and Akpabio to court. The court ruled in favor of SERAP and mandated Mr Malami to see that the fraudulent pension law was repealed. Malami argued that he had no such powers.
The ex governors serving as Senators were asked to return the money paid to them as pensions.
But, the problem was that if they must return the cash, the particular pension law must be abolished.

In 2017, Dr Bukola Saraki sponsored a bill at the Kwara State house of assembly for the state pension law for ex governors to be abolished.
The Kwara State Secretary to the state government then, Sola Isiaka told the public that Dr Bukola Saraki returned EVERY Kobo paid to him as pension.
He is the only ex governor that returned the fund and also facilitated the repeal of that law.

Many ex governors are still enjoying such privileges and some of them who are Senators and Ministers are still drawing their pensions as well as Salaries.
Amaechi, Akpabio, Fashola, Ngige etc are still taking theirs and nobody is talking, but the only man bold enough to return the money paid to him as pension, the only man thoughtful enough to oversee the removal of that particular law in his state is being Vilified!
