Federal Government’s grains meant for to relief poor people in Kano State have been abandoned wasted under the sun and in the rain in the state.

The 139 trailers of food that were sent to Kano two weeks ago were kept at an open space at the premises of Kano Agricultural Supply Company [KASCO] around Firm Center in Kano and not protected by Kano officials.

Sadiya Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development delivered the goods, which include 5,318 metric tons of rice; 2,438 metric tons of maize; 1,380 metric tons of millet and 900 metric tons of Sorghum, to Kano state.

A source at the premises who lamented that the stage of the food items spoiled under the rains, said the goods have spent more than two weeks without any action on it

“Many people are living in hunger because they cannot go to fetch for their daily sources of livelihood. Government brought the food to assist people but look at the items here under the rain and in the sun. How can people be starving and grains meant for them are abandoned?”.

When contacted, Chairman of the State Fund raising Committee and Vice-Chancellor, Bayero University Kano, Professor Mohammed Yahuza Bello explained that the evacuation and distribution of the palliatives was slated to commence on Thursday.

Professor Bello who led the distribution of the first phase of the state owned palliatives stressed that the committee was constraint by the issue of logistics from government, which he noted was being addressed.

Kano State government recently disbursed similar palliatives to 50,000 households across the 484 political wards in the state.
