The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has forward a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, cautioned him against the use of military force against protesters across the nation.

Despite the saying of Nigerian Army that its declared their ambition to begin ‘Operation Crocodile Smile’ in all the 36 states of the country was not because of the present protests in Nigeria.

The protests asking for disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, and total modification of the Nigeria police force have endured for over two weeks now.

The Aare Ona Kakanfo said in a letter written to President Buhari on Sunday, that instead of mobilizing soldiers against peaceful protesters, the President should listen to the people to not only reform, but transform the Nigeria police force.

Gani Adams asked for the establishment of State Police while denouncing all manners of violence whether from the protesters or the government.

He said it was so surprising that soldiers could be asked to against street protests while they are created to fight external forces and also reminded the government that using military force to silent protests by civilians had already been called illegal by a Federal High Court in July 2020.

The letter read in parts: “It is wrong to give the impression that Nigeria is at war with its citizens. We must do everything to promote and defend democratic culture.

“I condemn violence in all forms. I strongly condemn the actions of some security operatives that murdered the protesters.

“The list available to me shows 20 people have been killed across the country. I also condemn in the most profound manner the killing of any protester or the killing of any security official associated with the protests.

Gani Adams stated that violence have nothing good to offer as it request for revenge and creates wounds which marks never heal.

Adams added that violence will reduce important thinking, sabotage democracy and destroys the golden aims of the protesters, adding that it also questions the quality of those behind the protests.

Aare Ona Kakanfo warned that the government should not use violence as a reaction to violence, emphasized that it is not an option.

He added, “I saw clips of the attack on the convoy of the Governor of Osun State, His Excellency, Gboyega Oyetola. This is detasteful. In the same way I condemn the violent attacks on the convoy of the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi. It’s unfortunate that the incidence in Osun led to avoidable deaths.

“The police should not just be reformed, it should be transformed. This is the time for you to work with the National Assembly to establish State and community policing system in line with the fundamental principles of federalism. You have a golden opportunity to do this. Go ahead and take the bull by the horn and save Nigeria from the potential of horrendous evil of a garrison state."
